SFA 120 & 121 Mini Thesis
By Audrey Punsalang
Womanhood in the Philippines
For this year’s mini thesis (sy-2018-2019), I focused on painting the lifestyles of several Filipino women. Each painting portrays an issue in the life of each of these women in today’s modern world, and my own thoughts on it. The objective, first and foremost, is to educate every Filipino about the significance and role of these women in Philippine society. Secondly, I would like to spread awareness of the lives of these women, with the aim of encouraging our government and the nation as a whole to work for the improvement of their status in their own communities, and of their lives as a whole.
The idea of focusing on womanhood in the Philippines came from my earlier years of being a student in the UP College of Fine Arts. I often found myself painting and sketching portraitures of women and fusing it to surrealism art. My Ilokano ancestry also triggered my interest to know more about the cultures of other descents, especially the different ethnic tribes in the Philippines.
